I’ve often thought about taking the next steps in my career development and what that would look like. And the honest answer was that it involved a lot of sitting on the fence. Between running a community organisation, my home and being a wife and mother, I often found myself distracted.
I believe that when we spend so much time serving others we do not make time to delve into the level of capacity and power that we possess. As I am about to enter into the next year of my life I am assessing what ‘my’ future looks like. So I have decided to respond to the dreams that keep me awake at night. So I am daring to dream – but with purpose. This time it is different. This time it is a journey that involves me stepping into the spotlight and sharing my experiences and the knowledge I have gained along the way.
The Latin translation of the word Invicta means to be undefeated. The irony is that my middle name – Pinyoloya, means I have given up or I have been defeated. My siblings and I often laugh and joke about the naming of children before the 2000’s. In Ugandan Acholi culture, names were given to children that told a story of the positions their parents where in at the time of the child’s birth. Although I did not proudly boast my name growing up, I proudly sit here today as a testimony of where my life started and where I am today. Despite adversity and trials and tribulations, I stand here UNDEFEATED. All roads have lead to this moment right here.
But my question to you is, are you responding to your call to purpose? It’s ok to not have a clear vision and in some cases can be trial and error. As long as we remember that setbacks and diversions are not losses, but lessons. Over the years visibility has not ever been the goal. Yet hear I am giving myself the agency to step out of the shadows and into the lime light. I believe we should all have audacious faith. Courage does not always have to be loud. However if you do not try that idea or explore that business venture… someone else will.
A dream with nowhere to go is and idea waiting for belief. So write that book, get that degree, learn that new language.
The question is not what if I fall- but what if I fly?
